SEPARATRIX
My goal for this series is to ignite visceral awareness prompting an impactful inner conversation within the viewer. A conversation sparking exploration of feelings, thoughts and impulses suppressed or consciously buried. Worries, fears, inadequacies, and insecurities are all examined and embraced with the understanding that all of these are natural and universal. An understanding that empathy flourishes with awareness and acknowledgment, revealing in the beauty and uniqueness of self.
Freeing myself from the constructs of tradition and allowing my sub-conscious to project itself through colour and composition experimentation, I begin by taking reference photographs in my studio. I then use the photography to inspire the abstract layer of colour, which is the soul of the piece. I use spray paint, ink and acrylic to achieve this layer. I then add the figurative layer represented through the human form. Reflecting individualism, wealth of forms, shapes and expressions, I paint this second layer using soft pastels, brush pens and acrylic paint. This becomes the symbolic content, the enveloping body.
Some of my pieces are painted on half-inch PVC (high density recycled plastic) that I cut to size on a computer numerical control (CNC) machine. Others are painted on wood panels.
